Does The Winter Weather Effect Your Leg Veins ?

As we are now in the middle of the winter in New York the question of how the weather effects your legs varicose and spider veins has come up a few times in our Long Island and Manhattan offices.

In a nutshell it may have some effect but it will never fully cause veins to either disappear and stop the symptoms from those bulging varicosities, or to directly be a cause for veins to form and appear on your legs.

The cold weather causes the blood vessels on the exposed colder surfaces of the body to contract so the blood can stay warm and keep you warmer. This sometimes can cause a paleness or whiteness to the skin.  While it helps control body temperature it will have no long term effects on already enlarged bulging varicose veins.

Conversely in the warm weather of the summer the superficial blood vessels can dilate as a way to ‘lose heat’.  This is seen in the increased vascularity and redness of someone who has just exercised.  Again it is not a cause of spider veins, or varicose veins, to form on the legs.

If as Long Islanders or New Yorkers you are bothered by the worsening look and feel of your veins, now is a great time to consider vein treatments.  At the Schulman Vein And Laser Center all work in done in our offices and always by the Certified Doctors themselves.  Using lasers, microsurgy and injection treatments, all large leg varicose veins and smaller red and blue spider veins can be treated and removed.

To schedule a no-obligation, free vein screening either in NYC, Nassau or Suffolk County please call our offices.  We are open to see new patients during our morning, daytime or evening office hours.
