Some people can have very large bulging tortuous varicose veins in their legs and have no symptoms while others can have relatively small varicosities and many aches. There is no set reason for this other then that some people may be more sensitive while others are less sensitive. Dr. Martin Schulman MD, of the Schulman Vein And Laser Centers in NYC and Long Island, has noticed this after almost fifty years of specializing in vein treatments. He says “just like with other medical conditions, everybody has a different pain threshold and tolerance”.

Common Symptoms From Varicose Veins Include…

When a person has symptoms in the legs there are some that are commonly seen.

The most often complaints include:

  • Swelling that tends to settle around the ankles
  • Tiredness that is more evident towards the end of the day
  • Crampy pains in the legs that may be more problematic when at bedrest
  • More symptoms after long periods of standing but relieved somewhat with walking
  • A darkening to the skin most often on the inside of the ankle

As veins worsen symptoms tend to worsen as well. The larger the veins are the greater the volume of blood being ‘held’ in the legs and the more pressure there is on the vein walls. Some symptoms can be relieved by walking or moving while others will not change. When a person walks or moves they are squeezing the muscles in the legs which in turn squeezes the veins and helps push the blood back towards the heart. This works to lessen the pressure in the veins and often some of the symptoms. The benefit from this is most evident for things like swelling and achiness. Other symptoms such as the discoloration will not change or improve with activity.
